Why Painting?

My preferred media for both my exhibition and my other works as well lies mainly in watercolor and gouache. My use of gouache initially started out as an experimental project when I completed my painting, Woman in the Weeds, and transformed into my favorite media, as I fell in love with the matte finish of the paint that I greatly desired and lacked whilst completing acrylic works, as well as the same thin texture that allowed me to easily achieve gliding strokes that I adore in watercolors. I didn’t solely focus on painting as my main media for its physical qualities, but also on how it ties into my subject matter. My pieces contain surrealist themes of dreamlike worlds and the beauty in things that may not seem beautiful at first glance, and so I knew that the loose quality of watercolor would best help me achieve these dreamlike spaces.

Why Drawing?

Although my love for drawing does not rival my love for painting, drawing with different materials such as graphite and chalk pastel also proved to be a pleasant experience for me. Additionally, I believe that it is important to experiment with a wide variety of media as an artist in order to further your own abilities and gain more experience. The qualities of drawing as a medium that I do enjoy are that it allowed me to render more intricate details that are difficult to achieve when using watercolor or gouache.
